My top 10 iPod Touch/iPhone Apps

I’ve had my iPod a couple of days now to play around with, and have become addicted to it. Anyway, as promised, here are my 10 favourite apps for the iPod Touch in no particular order. There are both free and paid apps, so you can have a range of both if you like.

Any comments on my choices are welcome via comments, so if you’ve tried something I mention already, let us know what you think of it.

iPod Touch – I’ve Got One! (It’s a review!)

Yes, I know how much I really do not like Apple… but I had to get my hands on an iPod, what with all the music and video I have on my computer that I love. So yes, I own one, and I’m very proud of it.

I got the 8GB version since that’s really fine for me. It cost me £165 but I did buy it from The Gadget Show Live event so you know, it’s gonna be a little pricey.

Anyway, what do I think? I love it. It’s fantastic – no other word. It plays my music perfectly – the sound is really good. Videos are great too – I can rent movies from iTunes and stick them on my iPod (although they do take up a large amount of space) or I can put my own on too. Photos look nice on it too with it’s decent LCD screen.

Plus there are small things that are really. The iPlayer site for iPod/iTunes being a prime one. I love iPlayer on the PC, but being able to have it on my iPod is fantastic.

There are some really cool apps as well. I’ll do another post sometime on my favourite apps for the iPod Touch and iPhone. They are some that are just helpful, and others that are just fun to use.

I still do not like iTunes, but I don’t mind using it with my iPod – I can cope for now. I much prefer Windows Media Player to iTunes but you can’t use that with the iPod so I’ll have to make do. Still, iTunes does sync well and backs up my iPod regularly just in case I brick it by mistake.

The battery life isn’t brilliant but it’s enough to be usable. A few hours of apps, music and video will kill the battery in a few hours, but if you listen to music alone and try to keep the screen off, it’ll run for a pretty good time.

Anyway, no matter what, it’s become one of my favourite gadgets. It’s more practical than the PSP (that just feels like a brick now I’ve got my iPod) as it has a better web browser and is in general much more usable, and works as a good personal organiser. It’s got a decent calendar, alarm clock, notepad and calculator, plus it can read DOCs and PDFs from email (did I mention it sorts email as well).

So yes, I love my iPod. And I can’t imagine why I didn’t have one before now. Get one! Yes, there are MP3/MP4 players that have better spec, but there’s nothing like having the pleasure of owning an iPod (please let me know if I ever say that about a Mac – I won’t don’t worry!). I love the GUI and the usability.

This is one of the few times I’ll ever say this, but, good one Apple – great piece of kit, worth every penny!

Mobile phone cameras are improving…

Well, today I took my Nokia 3120 Classic out into the lovely snow and decided to take some good old snaps – partly because other people wanted to see them, but mostly because I wanted to test my phones camera.

And, frankly, I am amazed at how much mobile phone cameras are improving. My 3120 Classic has just 2 megapixels and flash, but it takes fantastic shots. Shutter response is not quick due to slow phone processors, but as long as you aren’t moving fast, it takes digital camera quality photos.

And when I’ve taken the shots, I can shoot them over to my PC either via USB or bluetooth.

I’m really loving how I no longer need to worry if I have forgotten to pick up my camera (or in the most common case of mine, forgotten to charge it up!!). As long as I have my phone, I’ve got no problem. My 2GB memory card will cover a couple of thousand 1600×1200  images so I’ve got no problem for space.

And by no means is the 3120 classic the lead in mobile phone cameras. There are 5 megapixel phones which take much better pictures, but the 3120 classic proves that you don’t have to burn a huge hole in your pocket to get good mobile snaps.

Why can’t you access internet on 3 (Three) Mobile without 3G available?

I love 3 (Three), they are fantastic. Calls and texts are cheap as chips and generally it’s an all round good network.

I have just one bone to pick though. Their 3G coverage in the UK is generally good but in my area there isn’t very much. If you live in a city, it’s a slightly different story as most cities have consistent 3G signal. But I, for one and many others, don’t.

So it becomes a problem when I can only get GPRS and EDGE where I live, as Three restrict access to the Internet so that you can only get to it when you’re in 3G. Try and get to it on 2G or 2.5G, and you’ll just get a timeout when going to an external site (any site other than Planet 3).

It’s a pain in the backside and I’ve made countless calls to Three about not being able to get Internet in 2G, but they won’t do anything about it other than repeatedly sending me Internet settings I already have.

Why can’t they just allow internet access in 2G signals? Is it only me that can’t get internet in 2G? If you are on Three and can get internet access (other than Planet 3) please post a comment so I can contact Three and investigate this further.

It just annoys me… why have mobile Internet if you can’t access it most of the time?

Update: I have recently been able to get internet on a 2G connection which is somewhat strange. It suddenly seemed to start working as soon as 3 introduced the free mobile internet when you top up. Can anyone else now get an internet connection from their phone when they are in 2G, and browse the web?

The toughest phone around – the JCB Tough Phone

Now most people aren’t that brutal with mobile phones. I mean, people bash them around a bit and scratch them a little, but nothing horribly serious.

Unless you are the kind of person who is really, really lethal to your mobile phone, this post won’ t interest you. However, if you’re phone is constantly being replaced because you keep cracking the screen or dropping it excessively, this might be of interest to you.

It’s called the JCB Tough Phone. Incase you don’t know who JCB are, they manufacture farm machinery and very large tractors. The JCB tough phone is one of the strongest phones around, claiming that it is splash resistant, shock proof, drop resistant and dust resistant.

I got hold of one recently and gave it a quick test. It’s very thick and well-made, and it’s well protected from drops and other common damages.

And that’s not it. It comes with 3 year warranty and no matter how you damage it, it if gets damaged, they’ll send you a brand new one for free. That’s it. No arguement.

In terms of features, it is slightly down. There’s no camera, but there is bluetooth and most other common phone features.

It is quite costly at £170 SIM free but it might just be worth it if you damage your phone a lot.
