Windows 7… what do you think?

Well it’s been on the news recently that Windows 7 is beginning to get it’s first visual demos and it’s being shown around a little. And from what I’ve seen, it looks like it’s going to be really nice. The visual design of it looks much more homely, and it looks like Microsoft wants to work even further at making the computer be more of a household object.

If you haven’t heard much about the new Windows 7, this post on Neowin.net will help you catch up a little. I’ve also got a few screenshots here that give a vague idea of what it will look like.

Obviously, the design could change at any time so this is only a vague idea. But by the looks of it, it might be quite nice – although I don’t like the start bar at all at the moment, but its probably only a demo.

Oh and a quick research says that it will be released anytime between the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 – fat chance in my opinion but we’ll see. Remember how delayed Vista was?

Lets just hope they don’t make the same mistakes with Windows 7 that they did with Vista.

What program do you use for email?

When it comes to email clients, theres a huge amount of choices. Heres the ones I know:

  • Microsft Outlook
  • Outlook Express (or Windows Mail for Vista)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Windows Live Mail (Beta)
And there are hundreds more. If you’re really interested take a look at this from Wikipedia, there’s loads there – most of them I have never even heard of.
I use a combination of Microsoft Outlook for my main email and Windows Live Mail for my other emails.
I’ve always liked them because they are both simple and easy to use, and just do the job.

Is the computer taking over conventional TV?

Every time I boot up my laptop TV tuner or go to iPlayer or the likes, it always makes me think. Is TV on your PC taking over normal TV?

I think it is. With a computer, you can now basically watch a programme whenever you want to. BBC’s iPlayer gives you 7 days to watch a program, the same goes for many others, and Five provides TV shows for several months now.

Watching live TV on your PC is also very cheap now. You can get a Freeview USB dongle for a laptop or PC now for around £20 and TV cards don’t cost a bomb either. Windows Media Center is perfect for watching TV on your PC and comes free with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. You can even use your computer as a PVR thanks to programs such as Windows Media Center, whereas a set top PVR for your TV is costing you sometimes a couple of hundred pounds.

It seems so much better value to use a computer for your TV nowadays.

Do you think TV on your PC is overtaking conventional television?

Ubuntu 8.10 to come soon, beta out now.

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta

Doing a general internet browse, I have seen on the Ubuntu site that 8.10 is on the way. If you’re a Ubuntu Linux user, you may want to have a look at the beta which (according to their site) has a number of updates.

Take a look and report back on it.

(I am not an avid Linux user so probably wont try this myself, but if you want to try it out, why not leave a comment so other people can read your opinion.)
