Feedburner transferring to Google

Feedburner, which was acquired by Google in 2007, is in the process of moving to google.com and at the end of February they plan to have all accounts hosted on Google instead of Feedburner.

If you have a Feedburner account, you can log onto feedburner.com and transfer your account now. I did it yesterday and it took about 3 hours to move 80 posts. But you can just set it and leave it.

Once you transfer it, you have to log in via your Google Account. You can do this by going to www.google.com and then My Account. It’s all relatively easy, but just takes a while.

The interface on feedburner.google.com is much the same as the original feedburner.com – in fact very little has changed.

So get in asap if you have a blog or site that uses Feedburner – I wouldn’t want to be in the last minute rush to move over.

EI System 1201 (DSG Retail) and RAM

I own an EI System 1201 as one of my laptops, as I thought it was an excellent budget buy. I bought it in June ’08 with Vista Home Premium… and sadly 1GB of RAM. Vista and 1GB RAM don’t mix, trust me.

Anyway, I googled some RAM for the system and many sites are telling me that it only has 1 RAM module. However, I’m not totally sure of this. I’ve taken the back off and this is what I saw:

Image 2

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is two slots.

Many sites are claiming that it is one slot only, but I think there may be another one hidden underneath it.

I am also trying to get clarification on whether the maximum memory is 2GB. I’ve seen this site, Ei Systems Laptop Memory :: 1201 Laptop Memory :: Offtek.co.uk, the Memory Superstore, which claims that there is a 2GB module avaialble for the system.

It’s all very blurry for me – can you get 2GB in by either getting 2x 1GB modules or 1X 2GB module. If you’ve got any experiences in installing memory in this laptop, please post a comment? Have you ever got 2GB in?

Update 7.2.09 – Thanks very much to Mark (see comments) who has now can confirmed he can upgraded his EI System 1201 with a 2GB PC5300 667mhz of RAM, and that he is relatively sure there is only one slot. So my mistake if I got that wrong :).

Update 21.2.09 – Have ordered a 2GB piece of RAM for the laptop from Crucial, so will report back when I have it delivered and installed. Wish me luck.

I can confirm the RAM upgrade was successful.

Overheating in Dell laptops

I was helping a friend fix a laptop that was constantly overheating. To be a little more specific, it was a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop that is about 4 years old now. It would constantly shut down on random occasions, and we couldn’t work out why.

In the end we guessed that it was probably just a problem with a fan either not working or a blocked fan.

We took apart the back of the laptop, and had a look at the main fan.

And you would not believe what we saw – several millimeters of pure dust and fluff! It was horrifying. There was probably 3 or 4 years of dust and dirt bunged into a small gap in the fan space.

So we got some pressurised spray designed to blow out dust and took it all out. Worked perfectly afterwards.

But if you are experiencing problems with overheating, Dell may tell you that its just a case of sending the laptop to them and having a new motherboard fitted. Rubbish. All you need is a small screwdriver, some dust remover, and about 10 minutes of time. You should find the laptop works much better afterwards.

Review: Windows Live Essentials 2009

It’s finally arrived – the finished edition of Windows Live Essentials from Microsoft Live, including the well known Windows Live Messenger, as well as Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Photo Gallery plus the Windows Live Family Safety and toolbar.

We’ve waited not far off a year for the newest version of Windows Live Messenger to appear on our screens, so I’ll kick off with that. The new interface of Windows Live Messenger is fantasic and is also much more customizable than the last version. It looks especially good if you have a version of Windows Vista (or Windows 7 Beta – it works on that too) with the Aero glass. It doesn’t look quite as good in XP. Nevertheless, looks aren’t everything, the new features are good. There’s a new groups feature – where you can create groups of your favourite mates and they all share the group with everyone in it, as well as a new favourites group for you personally. Fans of the Sharing Folders will be disappointed, as it would appear they have been scrapped. I personally never used the Sharing Folders as I would just send a file manually.

Windows Live Mail is also very good. New improvements include a much cleaner interface which is much more user friendly. Under the hood, there aren’t many really noticeable changes, but it is still definitely worth downloading and using – especially if you use Windows Live Hotmail a lot.

Windows Live Writer is a good blog editing program, but I don’t personally use it myself as I’m quite happy to simply use the WordPress admin interface to add whatever I need to. However, it does include some neat features including picture editing, and it does have some cool plugin support. However, nothing will beat the ease of use in the WordPress dashboard, and since they are both free, I’d go for WordPress.

The Windows Live Photo Gallery has always been something I’ve used when I’ve been viewing photos from my digital camera. It’s neat and tidy, and resembles the Windows Media Player interface vaguely. It’s also a simple way of transporting photos from your camera or memory card to your computer.

If you need a good package for writing blogs, talking to friends, emailing and viewing your photos, go ahead and download this. Computer manufacturers are already dispatching this with their systems (Dell has agreed to do this recently) so you may already have these programs with a new PC. If you don’t, head over to download.live.com to get it for free.

Why can’t you access internet on 3 (Three) Mobile without 3G available?

I love 3 (Three), they are fantastic. Calls and texts are cheap as chips and generally it’s an all round good network.

I have just one bone to pick though. Their 3G coverage in the UK is generally good but in my area there isn’t very much. If you live in a city, it’s a slightly different story as most cities have consistent 3G signal. But I, for one and many others, don’t.

So it becomes a problem when I can only get GPRS and EDGE where I live, as Three restrict access to the Internet so that you can only get to it when you’re in 3G. Try and get to it on 2G or 2.5G, and you’ll just get a timeout when going to an external site (any site other than Planet 3).

It’s a pain in the backside and I’ve made countless calls to Three about not being able to get Internet in 2G, but they won’t do anything about it other than repeatedly sending me Internet settings I already have.

Why can’t they just allow internet access in 2G signals? Is it only me that can’t get internet in 2G? If you are on Three and can get internet access (other than Planet 3) please post a comment so I can contact Three and investigate this further.

It just annoys me… why have mobile Internet if you can’t access it most of the time?

Update: I have recently been able to get internet on a 2G connection which is somewhat strange. It suddenly seemed to start working as soon as 3 introduced the free mobile internet when you top up. Can anyone else now get an internet connection from their phone when they are in 2G, and browse the web?
