What’s the point in Microsoft Silverlight?

Every time I get told that there are new updates to be installed, I open it up and somewhere in the list there is Microsoft Silverlight.

I’ve installed it before on my laptop but I uninstalled it because I couldn’t see what the point in it was.

Microsoft claims it enhances the browsing experience, but could someone tell me, how? It’s not like it makes my browsing experience any faster (in fact it probably makes my browsing experience slower!), and I don’t even use IE7 or IE8 so will it benefit me at all?

Microsoft’s web site is full of nagging ads that say Install Microsoft Silverlight, and it kind of bugs me.

I can try hiding the update in Windows Update but it just comes back every time a new version is released.

Could someone who actually uses it (and finds it useful) tell me what it’s for? I’m just wondering why Microsoft makes such a big deal about it.

Is it just me missing something that makes it amazing?

Sky Broadband – the ONLY broadband that’s truely unlimited

I heard this out a while back but I didn’t really think to post about it.

Anyway, according to Channel Five’s (UK) The Gadget Show, Sky.com is the only company in the UK that provides truelly unlimited broadband. On their full maxed out package, they recently removed their fair use policy and have told The Gadget Show that there is no cap whatsoever. Hopefully, this will persuade other companies to make their broadband fully unlimited.

So, if you’re looking for a full on broadband for all your download needs – head for Sky.com’s MAX package.

I myself have never needed full on broadband – I would’nt have thought I download more than 20GB a month on a busy month. Generally I suspect I download about 10GB a month, depending on where I am.

View a whole log of your computer history

Do you share your computer with somebody? Ever got onto your computer and had the suspision that someone might have been on it before you? As a matter of fact, I did today and I’ve found a program (included with Vista and I believe XP as well) that will tell you all you need to know.

It’s called the Event Viewer and it seems quite an obvious program but it does a lot more than you might think.

It basically monitors every program/service used (when it was started, when it was closed, whether there were any errors and whether it accessed the Windows system files), every log on and off (and whether someone attempted to log on but failed), and other events which are more advanced.

To get to it all you need to do is fling up the Vista start menu and type in Event Viewer and press enter, and for XP head to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. When that comes up, click Event Viewer.

Here’s what it looks like in Vista:

WordPress 2.7 Beta 2 Out Now

The WordPress Developement have released beta 2 of WordPress 2.7 with a long list of updates and bug fixes.

I’m not going to test it on my server because I don’t think there’s a huge amount of updates from a visual perspective.

Anyhow, if you want to see what’s been done, head over to http://wordpress.org/development/2008/11/wordpress-27-beta-2/

You can also grab a copy there or from your Admin itself.

Don’t forget the final release is due on the 10th 🙂

Enjoy!

The illegal file sharers

France looks like the first country to take final action on the illegal file sharers.

It looks like they are taking plans to cut off illegal internet file sharers after sending warning emails and letters. The law is now in place for final approval.

The plan means that there will be “community watchdogs” who will monitor users for illegal usage.

The idea is that these “watchdogs” will send two warnings out to the user to warn them that they will loose their connection if the continue. If they fail to react to the warnings, their connection is terminated altogether.

In my opinion, I don’t think it’s fair to have someone watching your internet access.

What do you think?
